Far Eastern University (FEU) at Nicanor Reyes Street (formerly Morayta Street) University Belt in Manila, Philippines. It is a nonsectarian, private university in the Philippines. It takes pride in its eminent founder who was educated in the United States and who teamed up with excellent academics to establish what would eventually become one of the prominent universities in the Philippines. FEU is a founding member of the two major collegiate athletic organizations in the Philippines, namely the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA Philippines) and the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). The university is also one of the pioneers of accountancy education in the Philippines. FEU offers programs in the fields of architecture, fine arts, liberal arts, sciences, accountancy, commerce, education, graduate research, engineering, technology, law, nursing, and medicine. To date, FEU has maintained its respectable place among the top accountancy, architecture, law, and medicine schools in the Philippines. Its students are among the most decorated in regional, national and international competitions. FEU has produced graduates who where manning, if not heading, the pioneering companies and corporations in the country. Among its alumni are former Supreme Court Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban, business tycoons Henry Sy of SM Prime Holdings, Lucio Tan of Fortune Tobacco, UE and Philippine Air Lines, Ambassador Alfonso Yuchengco of Yuchengco Group of Companies, CEO Benjamin Punongbayan of Punongbayan & Araullo, President and CEO George Yang of McDonald's Philippines, and President Ramon Ang of San Miguel Corporation among others. The university also has ISO certification (9001:2000) and UNESCO Heritage award for having the largest ensemble of preserved art deco buildings in the country. History Presidents of Far Eastern University | | Nicanor I. Reyes Sr., 1934-1942 | | Hermenigildo B. Reyes, 1945-1946 | | Clemente Q. Uson, 1946-1949 | | Vidal A. Tan, 1949-1952 | | Teodoro T. Evangelista, 1952-1970 | | Nicanor M. Reyes Jr., 1970-1985 | | Josephine Cojuangco-Reyes, 1985-1989 | | Felixberto C. Sta. Maria, 1989-1995 | | Edilberto C. de Jesus, 1995-2002 | | Lydia B. Echauz, 2002-present | Far Eastern University traces its roots to the Institute of Accountancy, founded in 1928 by a group of educators led by Dr. Nicanor Reyes, Sr., who obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in Accountancy and Master of Arts in Business Administration from Columbia University after he finished his bachelors degree in Commercial Science in 1917 in New York University and his Bachelor of Arts at the University of the Philippines in 1915. He had served as chair of the Department of Economics of UP before he decided to establish his own school. The Far Eastern University adopted following the merger of two schools; the Institute of Accountancy (now IABF) founded in 1928 by Dr. Nicanor Reyes and the Far Eastern College (1919), which offered courses in the liberal arts, was founded in Quiapo originally by Nicanor Maronilla and Vicente Fabella (he later made a "revival" of Far Eastern College and named it as Jose Rizal College) The Institute of Accountancy initially introduced a three-year non-degree program as a springboard and then proceed to offer courses in Business Administration, Economics, Banking and Finance. It was eventually named Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance. When Dr. Reyes gained the controlling stock of the Far Eastern College, which primarily offered Liberal Arts, he decided to merge it with IABF. With expanded established course offerings and increased student population, the school merited a status of a full-fledged university. Thus on November 5, 1933, Dr. Nicanor Reyes became the first president of what then came to be known as Far Eastern University. AFTER THE MERGE AND DURING WORLD WAR II
To differentiate FEU from other universities, Dr. Reyes decided to call the colleges that offer a cluster of related courses as "institutes". He retained IABF and integrated the Liberal Arts and Science programs under the Institute of Arts and Sciences (IAS). Also established in1931 were the Institute of Education (IE), the Boys High School the Girls High Scho ol and the Grade School. The Institute of Law was established in 1934, and two years later, the Institute of Technology was established. From the initial 117 students, population grew to 11,000. Other buildings were constructed in the 1930's and till the early 1940s, but the rapid expansion was cut off by World War II. The university's buildings forcibly turned the headquarters of the Japanese Imperial Army burning all University records, books, and facilities sparing only the buildings, which they used as a concentration camp. Many executions of top Filipino leaders in resistance to Japanese occupation, like that of Josefa Llanes Escoda and her colleagues were conducted on campus. When the Japanese Army went into retreat as the Americans were coming to shore to liberate Manila, the soldiers went on a killing rampage and massacred Dr. Reyes and other members of his family. Shorty before the tragic event took place, though, Dr. eyes had the satisfaction of being told by no less than then Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon, in a visit in the campus: " Dr. Reyes, I do not mind telling you that I think Far Eastern University the best non-sectarian institution in the country today." AFTER WWII: CARRYING ON DR. REYES LEGACY FEU reopened during the second semester of 1945 despite of use of most of its facilities by the American Forces until their departure in May 1946. Then in 1955, the Institute of Nursing (IN) and the Institute of Medicine (IM) were established After embarking on an expansion program of physical plant and facilities to accommodate its growing student population and to cope with the demands of the times, FEU focused on improved instruction and training qualified students by establishing the Institute of Graduate Studies in 1958. By the 60s, FEU gained a reputation as one of the best schools in the country for doctors and nurses. The reputation holds on to this day, except that Medicine is now offered by the "sister school" known as FEU- Dr. Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation (FEU-NRMF) which has its facilities in Fairview, Quezon City, (The hospital has also been moved to Fairview in the early 2000s as a part of the FEU-NRMF facilities there.) Fine Arts, with painting and Interior Designs as majors, as well as Commercial Arts, began to be offered in the University in the 60s, with very encouraging results in terms of enrollment and quality of their graduates, Thus in July 1970, the university established the Institute of architecture and Fine Arts (IARFA). After the Martial Law, Various curricula were also reviewed leading to new academic programs. It became a listed corporation (PSE: FEU) in the Philippine Stock Exchange on July 11, 1986. The present acting President is Dr, Lydia Echauz who replaced Dr. Edilberto De Jesus after he was appointed Secretary of the Department of Education by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the second time that an FEU executive was appointed Education Secretary. Under the leadership of the Chairman Emeritus Dr. Lourdes Reyes-Montinola, a foundation was created to shoulder expenses for the studies of faculty members here and abroad. International linkages and exchange programs were forged to further educational programs. The University Seal The FEU coat-of-arms was conceptualized in 1933 as the official seal of the university and is still being used at present with minor alterations in its shape (oval) and founding year (1928). The standard consists of an eight-pointed golden star (at the center of the Sarimanok) representing the first eight (IABF, IAS, IL, IE IN, IM, IARFA, IT) main academic disciplines offered by the University.
The heraldic supporter is a Sarimanok motif, in full color, projecting the nationalistic spirit upon which the University was founded. It also serves as the link between the past and the present. The FEU alphabet fonts are patterned after the pre-colonial Philippine script or “baybayin.” The same font was used by the nationalist pre-war periodicals El Renacimiento and Renacimiento Filipino. The Tamaraw is the mascot of every FEU Athletic team. Hence, is the pet name of every FEU student (Tams). Known scientifically as “Bubalus mindorensis”, it is a rare animal found only in the island of Mondoro. The Tamaraw is one of the most intelligent, pugnacious, and aggressive of Philippine animal species. The University colors are green and gold. Gold represents the golden opportunity for the University to serve the youth and for her alumni to serve the country. Green is for hope, representing the founder’s "fair hope of the fatherland."
